The Los Angeles Park Ranger Mounted Unit pairs Park Rangers with trained equine partners to serve throughout Los Angeles parks. Together, Ranger and horse form a working partnership built on trust, horsemanship and preparation.
THE PARTNERSHIP
More Than a Horse and Rider
Mounted patrol depends on a close working relationship between Ranger and horse. Rangers must understand their horse, communicate through subtle cues and remain aware of both their surroundings and their equine partner.
That partnership is developed through consistent riding, training and time spent working together—creating the trust needed to navigate trails, public spaces and the changing environments encountered throughout Los Angeles parks.
MOUNTED SERVICE
From the Stable to the Parks
A day of mounted service begins long before a Ranger enters the park. Rangers prepare and care for their horses, check tack and equipment, and make sure both horse and rider are ready for the work ahead.
Once mounted, Rangers patrol trails and park areas, observe conditions, interact with visitors and respond wherever their presence is needed. At the end of the ride, caring for the horses and their equipment remains part of the responsibility.
